A full walkthrough of making one-time payments, setting up autopay, changing payment methods, and resolving failed payments in the OrthoFi patient portal.
Making a one-time OrthoFi payment
Most OrthoFi payments run automatically through autopay once your service contract is signed. If you want to make an extra payment, pay down the balance early, or catch up on a missed invoice, you can do it through the patient portal.
Log into the OrthoFi patient portal
Go to www.orthofi.com and click Patients at the top right. Enter the username and password you set up at your consultation. If you need help, see our OrthoFi login guide.
Open your payment plan
Once logged in, open your payment plan. You will see all past and upcoming invoices for your treatment, with amount due, due date, and status.
Click Make Payment
The Make Payment button lets you submit a one-time payment outside of your autopay schedule.
Choose a payment method
Pick a payment method already on file, or add a new one. You can typically pay by card or bank account (ACH); accepted card types can vary by practice. Confirm the amount and submit.
Save your receipt
Patients report receiving an email receipt for each payment, and past receipts are available in the portal. If you need a copy later, log back in and download it from there.
Setting up and managing OrthoFi autopay
Autopay is set up during your initial OrthoFi contract signing. Once active, OrthoFi charges the payment method on file automatically every month on your scheduled due date. To change the payment method used for autopay:
- Log into the patient portal
- Open the payment methods section
- Add your new card or bank account
- Set the new method as the default or primary autopay source
- Remove the old method only after confirming the new one is active
Changing your OrthoFi monthly due date
If your paycheck schedule changes or the current due date is causing issues, you can shift it. If your practice allows it, you can pick a new due day in the portal; otherwise, ask the office. The next invoice will run on the new date.
If an OrthoFi payment fails
A failed draft can trigger a fee. Patients have reported a $25 failed-payment fee, and if you have a backup payment method on file, it may be charged instead [17]. If you spot a failed payment, log in immediately, update your payment method, and submit a one-time payment to catch up. Call your orthodontist's office promptly if you want to ask whether the fee can be waived.
Paying off your OrthoFi plan early
Before paying a large lump sum, ask your orthodontist's financial coordinator for the exact payoff amount and whether any interest or fees still apply.
Third-party loans through AcceptCare follow the individual lender's prepayment policy. Most online personal loans do not charge prepayment fees, but check your loan agreement first.
OrthoFi payment refund policy
If you believe you were charged incorrectly, contact your orthodontist's office first. The practice can review the charge and request a correction.
Can I make an OrthoFi payment by phone?
Yes. If you cannot access the portal, call OrthoFi support at 877-766-5220, Monday through Friday, 8am to 7pm Eastern Time. Have your account information and payment method ready.
What happens if you fall behind on OrthoFi payments
OrthoFi handles collections for practices when accounts fall behind. A missed payment can trigger reminders and a fee. Accounts that stay past due can be sent to collections, and OrthoFi's patient agreement allows it to report late or missed payments to credit bureaus [18].
If you are struggling to make payments, contact your orthodontist's office before you miss a payment. The practice may be able to pause or restructure your plan, for example by changing the number of payments or the amount.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay my OrthoFi bill with a credit card?
Yes. Card and bank account (ACH) payments are typically accepted; accepted card brands can vary by practice. You can set either as your autopay source or use them for one-time payments.
Does OrthoFi charge a convenience fee for credit card payments?
This varies by practice. Some orthodontic offices pass through credit card processing fees as a small percentage of the payment; others absorb them. Your service contract will specify any such fees. Bank (ACH) payments are less likely to carry a processing fee; check your agreement.
Can I pay more than my monthly OrthoFi amount?
Yes. A one-time payment can be more than your scheduled amount, up to your remaining balance. Extra payments reduce the principal and shorten your overall payment timeline on interest-bearing plans.
Will OrthoFi send me a payment reminder?
OrthoFi's patient agreement allows it to contact you by email, phone, and text about your account [18], but some patients say they got no warning before a failed-payment fee [17], so keep your own reminder of your draft date. Make sure the email address on your account is current and that OrthoFi emails are not landing in your spam folder.
